Off-Topic - What I learned from Transportation

It is 3.45 pm and I'm standing at the bus stop. The bus is going to come in five minutes. I've got a meeting with my masseuse at 5 pm and with the bus coming in 5 minutes everything will run smoothly.
It is 3.50 pm and no bus in sight. Well, these five minutes won't make a big difference, so I am still calm.
3.55 pm and no bus coming. I could walk to the tube station. It would take me 8 minutes, and I know the trains are passing every five minutes. But I've already been waiting for 10 minutes now, and walking now would mean having been waiting for nothing. So I keep on waiting.
It's 4 pm now, and still no bus coming. Okay, I will walk. I turn round, but can't resist to look back once more. The bus is coming!
I return to the bus stop. The bus is approaching the bus stop. It is full up to the last seat, and there are a lot of people standing in the middle. Well, I'll have to push myself in. The bus is coming nearer - and drives on, leaving me and at least seven other people behind. It is too full to let any more people in.
In the meantime, it is 4.10 pm. I'll have to run now in order to be on time at my masseuse's place. I finally get there five minutes late, and I have learnt something:

I could have avoided coming late if - from the beginning - I had walked. It would have been not so comfortable, but in the end, things would have run smoothly.
Looking for comfortable ways of doing something often makes the whole thing uncomfortable in the end.
Somebody tells you he's got a wonderful picture for your next blog post, and that he is going to mail it to you. You've told him about your blogging schedule, and he promises to mail you in time. So you stop thinking about the picture and concentrate on the words. You can guess what's happening. In the end you've got to look for it on your own - which puts additional stress on you. Mind you, I don't speak against relying on other people or certains things in general. But sometimes it is better to rely on yourself.

Off the Road / Neben der Straße

Some days ago I went for a walk just around the place where I am living. I took my camera, because this forces me to see the things I otherwise would not. For example these blossoms. And these ones:




It hadn't been raining for a few days, so the grass is getting yellow. But still the blossoms look somewhat special. It's the beauty in the simple things which I like so much.

Die Bilder sind das Ergebnis eines Spaziergangs rund um das Viertel, in dem ich wohne. Ich nahm zu diesem Spaziergang die Kamera mit, und siehe da, ich nahm plötzlich Dinge wahr, an denen ich vorher achtlos vorbeigegangen wäre. Diese Blüten fand ich am Wegesrand, und obwohl die Dürre der letzten Tage das Gras ziemlich mitgenommen hat, sehen sie irgendwie besonders aus.

Bavaria Series #8 Bavarian Inns

A traditional inn

There are lots and lots of traditional inns in Bavaria. Every village has got its one or two inns - often big, impressive buildings like this one. They serve traditional bavarian food, like "Schweinsbraten mit Knödel" - roasted pork with dumplings. And of course nice, cool beer. Sometimes they offer traditional folk music, not so much for tourists, but of the locals' entertainment. And they are important meeting places for the people who live there: for the local clubs like the soccer club of the village, or the fire brigade.

In Bayern gibt es immer noch - glücklicherweise - sehr viele traditionelle Gasthäuser. Jedes Dorf hat sein eigenes Gasthaus, oft sogar mehr als eins. Oft sind es große, beeindruckende Gebäude wie dieses hier. Es wird traditionelle bayerische Küche serviert, z.B. Schweinsbraten mit Knödel, und natürlich schönes kühles Bier. Manchmal gibt es auch traditionelle bayerische Volksmusik - nicht für Touristen, sondern für die Einheimischen. Und diese Gasthäuser sind wichtige Treffpunkte für die Menschen, die hier leben: für die örtlichen Vereine wie den Fußballverein des Dorfes oder die Feuerwehr.

Bavaria Series #7 High up in the Mountains / Hoch in den bayerischen Bergen

This is high in the Bavarian Alps. In the summer, cows are grazing all over. The grass is very spicy, and so is the milk and the cheese then. The air is pure, so this is also the place for people with allergies.

Hoch oben in den Bayerischen Bergen. Im Sommer grasen hier überall Kühe. Das Gras ist sehr würzig, und so ist auch die Milch und der Käse. Die Luft ist rein - die ideale Gegend für Allergiker!

Bavaria Series #6 Landscapes - Spitzingsee

Spitzingsee is a small village (well mostly hotels, I must say) in the Bavarian Alps. It is also the name of the lake. It's a quite touristic place, but here I was lucky to take a picture without any people on it. Looking at these mountains man can feel really small...

Bavaria # 5 Landscapes - The Mountains

How many times did we pass that lake, my husband and me, when we spent our holidays in Bavaria! It's called the Sylvenstein Lake, and it's on the border to Austria. It is not a genuine lake, but a water supply dam, responsible for the region down north till Munich.

Wieviele Male sind mein Mann und ich an diesem Stausee vorbeigefahren, als wir unsere Ferien in Bayern verbrachten. Dies ist der Sylvenstein See, der für die Wasserversorgung bis hinunter nach München verantwortlich ist.

Bavaria # 4 Landscapes

I took this picture on the "Hohe Peißenberg", which is in Upper Bavaria.
Normally you can hundreds of miles or kilometres from here, but on that day it was a bit misty. But I liked the small graveyard and the different shades of green. Could be anywhere in Italy, too, I think - don't you feel the southern atmosphere, too?

Diese Aufnahme wurde auf dem "Hohen Peißenberg" gemacht, einem Berg im Voralpenland in Bayern.
Normalerweise kann man von hier aus weit ins Land hineinsehen. An diesem Tag war es sehr dunstig; trotzdem reizten mich der kleine Friedhof und das viele Grün dazu, hier ein Foto zu machen. Die Landschaft könnte auch in Italien sein - spüren Sie nicht auch die südliche Atmsophäre?

Bavara Series # 3 / Monastery from Inside

Isn't there a time when you want some peaceful time, away from the urban traffic and all the noise? A place where you could listen to the sound of nature, the birds singing and the rustling of the leaves?
My last blog entry belonging to the series about Bavaria showed you a monastery from the outside - well mainly the church tower of the monastery.
What a feeling did you have when you saw it? The feeling of peace? Or the feeling of power enacted by the church?
Well, look at the picture above now. When I visited this monastery and the yard with the big tree in the the green meadow, I thought:
What a peaceful place! What a place to slowly walk around, even meditate.
What is your feeling? Tell me!

Off-Topic - What I learned from Ants

This is just a little break from the Series "Pictures of Bavaria". It will be continued with the next post, so I ask you for a bit of patience.

This post here is a contribution to the Writing Project "What I learned from Animals".
Some days ago I had to water the plants on my husband's grave. I've got to do this every two or three days, because here in Berlin we didn't have rain for over one week. So I fetched the watering can, went to the water, filled it and very slowly watered the thirsty plants. Suddenly I felt a tickling on my left hand; just like some insect would run over it.
I am not very keen on insects; everything with more than four feet gives me the creeps. So I very slowly looked at my hand, hoping it was an insect I was able to cope with. Okay, three ants were running over my hand. My first reaction was to hit them with the other hand (they are so small I would have got all three of them at once); but then I decided not to. I brought my hand to the earth and very cautiously helped them to get to the ground. I decided to watch and follow them, and some times later they had found their fellow ants, which were trying to carry off a thick green leaf. It was almost impossible, but they never gave up, and in the end, carried away the leaf in silent triumph (at least that whas the impression they gave).

Well, what did I learn?
1. Sometimes it takes a kind person to get you back to the right way when you're lost. Traffic is low, comments are near zero, and you feel down and out. Somebody comes and takes you by the hand instead of hitting you on the head with a harsh critic.
2. Keep going on! Even if the way is steep and the load is heavy, you can do it!

Bavaria #2: Bavarian monastery / Byern 2: Bayerische Klöster

In my last blog entry you could see a small village church. Here you can see a bavarian monastery. There's a lot of them in Bavaria; in the middle ages they had very much power and influence on politics; they owned big parts of the land and had a lot of people working for them. Most of them used to have own breweries - and some of them still have. Each brewery used to have its monastery inn where beer and simple meals were served.

In meinem letzten Blogeintrag sahen Sie eine kleine Dorfkirche. Diese Kirche hier gehört zu einem der großen zahlreichen bayerischen Klöster. Im Mittelalter hatten diese Klöster einen großen politischen Einfluss; sie besaßen viel Land und eine Menge Leute mussten dort arbeiten. Viele hatten ihre eigene Brauerei, einige von ihnen haben sie immer noch. Und zur Brauerei gehört ein "Bräustübl", in denen zum Bier leckere landestypische Mahlzeiten serviert werden.

With this photo I am beginning a series of photos taken in Bavaria. I think the contrast between the rural Bavaria and Berlin could not be bigger - the green of pastures, the blue sky with the white clouds, the small churches and no people (they are either working in the nearby town or on their fields). Enjoy!

Mit diesem Foto beginne ich eine Serie von Photos, die ich in Bayern aufgenommen habe. Für mich könnte es zwischen Berlin und dem ländlichen Bayern keinen größeren Kontrast geben: Das Grün der Weiden, der blaue Himmel mit den weißen Wolken, die kleinen Kirchen und wenig oder gar keine Menschen (sie arbeiten entweder in der nahen Stadt oder auf den Feldern. Viel Vergnügen beim Ansehen!

Mixture of Architecture / Architektur - gemischt

Again the Kreuzberg part of the Friedrichstraße. It is a heavy mixture of different architectural styles. The first building on the left side is built in the sixties; the house following is a hotel built in the style of the 19th century and the block following is built in the 21st century.

Wieder die Friedrichstraße in Kreuzberg, Berlin. Hier bilden sich drei Architekturstile unmittelbar aufeinander folgend ab: Die 60er Jahre (1. Gebäude links), ein auf alt getrimmtes Gebäude, das so 2005 gebaut wurde, und ein Gebäude, das zu Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts gebaut wurde.

Friedrichstraße Kreuzberg

This is the Friedrichstraße in Kreuzberg, not the Friedrichstraße in Mitte. It is the poor part of this long street. The building on the left side accomodates the police; the building with the tower on the right the Federal employment office.
Dies ist die Kreuzberger Friedrichstraße, nicht die edle Friedrichstraße in Mitte. Sie ist der arme Teil dieser langen Straße. Auf der linken Seite ein Polizeigebäude, das Gebäude mit dem Turm rechts ist das Arbeitsamt bzw. nun die Jobagentur.

Art in the Garden / Kunst im Garten

You would not surmise it - art in the garden in a mostly turkish or arabian community in Kreuzberg. It is straight across where I live, and the garden belongs to a pharmacy. The owner of the pharmacy is also an artist, so her garden is also her show-room...

Man würde es nicht vermuten - Kunst im Vorgarten in einer hauptsächlich türkischen oder arabischen Nachbarschaft in Kreuzberg. Der Garten liegt schräg gegenüber meiner Wohnung, und er gehört zu einer Apotheke. Die Inhaberin der Apotheke ist gleichzeitg Künstlerin und ihr Garten ist ihr Ausstellungsraum...

Sunday afternoon at the cemetery / Sonntag Nachmittag auf dem Friedhof

It may sound a little strange but I enjoy walking around in old historical cemeteries. This one is beneath the Tube station Hallesches Tor; in its beginnings it was situated right out of the city. A lot of famous people are buried here - for example Moses Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, the famous composer.

Es klingt vielleicht ein bisschen komisch, aber ich gehe gern auf alten Friedhöfen spazieren. Dieser hier liegt in der Nähe des U-Bahnhofs Hallesches Tor in Berlin. Zu seiner Gründungszeit lag er außerhalb der Stadtgrenze. Hier liegen viele bekannte Personen begraben, unter anderem der Komponist Moses Mendelssohn-Bartholdy.

Pansies / Stiefmütterchen

I found these pansies on an historical cemetery n Berlin. Pansies are flowers of very early spring - they can deal with cold nights. Most of them now are withering, but some of them are still blooming.

Diese Stiefmütterchen habe ich auf einem der alten historischen Friedhöfe Berlins gefunden. Stiefmütterchen werden im frühen Frühling gepflanzt, weil sie gut Nachtfröste vertragen. Viele von ihnen sind nun verblüht, einige stehen aber noch in vollem Saft.

Parks in Berlin

The park above is very small, and it's near the Friedrichstraße with a lot of traffic. The contrast between this "green isle" and the street life is big.
Der unten gezeigte Park ist sehr klein, und er liegt dicht an der lauten Friedrichstraße. So bietet diese grüne Insel einen starken Kontrast zum Meer aus Beton.
